Clarification regarding Sept. 9, 2006 Boston Globe article

It is well-documented that numerous, serious human rights violations occurred in Iran during Khatami’s presidency. However, the task of precisely determining responsibility for violations can be a complicated one, especially in light of Iran’s complex government structure and the existence of numerous state organs that appear to be involved in the detention and interrogation of accused persons.

The fact that human rights organizations such as the IHRDC have not yet documented specific evidence personally implicating former President Khatami in violations should not be interpreted as ruling out the possibility that evidence implicating Khatami or any other IRI official may become available in the future. Nor should it be interpreted to absolve any government official of responsibility for failing to ensure that human rights and the rights guaranteed under Iran’s constitution are respected.
