Yesterday the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) voted to grant consultative status to the Iran Human Rights Documentation Center (IHRDC). Having consultative status with ECOSOC will enable IHRDC to better engage with Iran's civil society and the international community. This development is a new chapter in IHRDC's history as it will continue to promote human rights, rule of law, and accountability in Iran.

The resolution to grant IHRDC consultative status was approved with 22 votes in favor, 7 against, and 17 abstentions. Eight countries did not take part in the vote.

“IHRDC will utilize its ECOSOC consultative status to give Iran’s civil society a voice in the United Nations’ mechanisms. We look forward to working with other NGOs, human rights organizations, and other stakeholders as we tackle a broad range of issues and challenges,” said Shahin Milani, IHRDC’s Legal Director.

The Iran Human Rights Documentation Center is an independent non-profit organization that was founded in 2004 by human rights scholars and lawyers. The mission of the Center is to:

  • Establish a comprehensive and objective historical record of the human rights situation in Iran, and on the basis of this record, establish responsibility for patterns of human rights abuses;
  • Make the record available in an archive that is accessible to the public for research and educational purposes;
  • Promote accountability, respect for human rights and the rule of law in Iran; and
  • Encourage an informed dialogue on the human rights situation in Iran among scholars and the general public in Iran and abroad.
